Craig Craft have made a version of their 168 Boss speedboat that appears to have styling cues that are reminiscent of cars made by Porsche, especially the 993, the final variant of the 911 series.
Fast Facts
- There has been a Craig Craft 168 Boss speedboat made that bears a bit of a resemblance to the Porsche 993.
- While not actually being a Porsche boat this little nautical fun machine certainly offers a lot of fun in a modest, and affordable package.
- One of these boats is on sale at Bring a Trailer at time of publication.
We don’t normally associate the name “Porsche” with boats, only with gorgeous automobiles: but that being said the name “Porsche Design” is associated with a range of interesting items including sunglasses, timepieces, kitchen knives, luggage, fashion, and boats.
The company was founded by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who was the son of Ferry Porsche – the creator of the Porsche 356, and grandson of Ferdinand Porsche – the creator of the Volkswagen.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was the designer of the original Porsche 911, which was developed to give the world such cars as the Porsche 964 and finally the Porsche 993.
A couple of examples of the boats created in collaboration with Porsche Design include the Porsche Kineo, and the Porsche/Donzi.
A recent development is the Frauscher x Porsche eFantom – which is created in collaboration with boat builder Frauscher and powered using drive technology from the Porsche Macan.
The Porsche cars design style has been so iconic that there have been people who have produced things that have some similarity to the Porsche cars: and one such creation was the Craig Craft 168 Boss.
The Craig Craft 168 Boss is a compact 16 foot long speedboat powered by a GM based 4.3 liter V6 engine which should give it a nice turn of speed: certainly enough for water skiing and perhaps wake-boarding.
Being a quite compact boat it should also be quickly maneuverable, and it really looks like something James Bond would appreciate. In my imagination I can picture Commander Bond RN in his captain’s hat at the helm of a Craig Craft 168 Boss, just as he was in the boat chase scene in the movie “From Russia With Love”.
If you are a Porsche admirer, as many of us are, and think that a boat that looks a bit like a Porsche would be a rather nice thing to bring into one’s life then that ambition can be fulfilled as one of these unusual Craig Craft 168 Boss speedboats is for sale on Bring a Trailer at time of publication.
The boat on offer is painted in a tasteful nautical blue, with a blue and ivory interior. It has seating for four in automobile style bucket seats behind the sports car style windshield, and the dashboard looks very much like it has been transplanted from a high performance sports car, along with the three spoke steering wheel.
In James Bond style the boat’s drive is a Berkeley Jet Drive with Reverse, making it rather adaptable to a variety of water situations.
The boat is fitted with a ski pylon, bluetooth stereo system, and comes with a Bimini canvas top and single-axle trailer: the boat and trailer having Florida registration.
This looks to me like a sweet little fun-machine that will probably attract a crowd of Porsche enthusiasts wherever its parked.
