An old saying reminds us that “the race is not always to the swift”, and when it comes to traveling into places that are decidedly vehicle unfriendly then a vehicle that can traverse rocks, mud, water, snow and ice is a decidedly useful one to travel in, even if its top speed is a modest 25mph (40km/hr).
A vehicle that has the ability to adapt to cross water has a highly desirable strength: imagine you are crossing a frozen river and as you cross you hear the sound of the ice cracking under you as it breaks and drops you into the icy water – in a four-wheel-drive that’s not likely to be a good experience – but in a vehicle such as the Quadro Sherp N 1200 its going to be a case of the vehicle floating and paddling its way out of what could have been a nasty mess.
The N 1200 is stated by the manufacturer to be able to climb from water onto ice.
The Quadro Sherp N 1200 is powered by a 1.8 liter, three cylinder Doosan diesel engine which delivers a modest 55hp in terms of power and a rather respectable torque of 165lb/ft: it is an agricultural engine created for lugging and load hauling.
The load the vehicle can carry is up to 1.2 metric tonnes (2,646lb), and it has a towing capacity of 2,350kg (5,181 lb).
The N 1200 can climb a 35 degree grade and has 23 inches (584 mm) of ground clearance.
The engine delivers its power and torque via a six-speed manual transmission, and chain drive to all four wheels.
Those 25 inch wheels are fitted with 71 inch low-pressure tires (1800×600-25 Sherp-branded low-pressure tires), with tire pressures being controlled and monitored from the driver’s compartment by a central tire inflation system.
These tires are fitted with a straight lug tread pattern for maximum traction in mud, sand and snow, and also to act as paddle wheels when the vehicle is crossing water.
Each wheel contains an auxiliary fuel supply of 15 US gallons (58 liters) and this is combined with the main fuel tank of 95 liters capacity giving the vehicle a total fuel capacity of 327 liters (86 US gallons).
Fuel consumption is around 5-8 liters per hour of operation depending on conditions. So the vehicle should be good for a good 40 hours operation.
The N 1200 is ruggedly constructed being based on a galvanized steel platform with aluminum alloy bodywork. These features creating a vehicle of relatively light weight and corrosion resistance.
Driving the N 1200 is a tad different to a car or truck. The vehicle steers in the same way as a tracked vehicle such as a tank or a bulldozer.
So, to steer the brakes are applied on one side to slow that side down while the other side pushes the vehicle into the turn. This method eliminated a lot of steering gear that would otherwise be required and makes the N 1200 highly maneuverable.
In the interests of keeping the vehicle’s engineering as simple and reliable as possible there is also no suspension system. The sheer size of the tires and their flexibility means that the tires provide the suspension, much as on some agricultural vehicles.
